the first time i went, i learned the basics...how to mix the soy sauce with the wasabi and what was the difference between the various rolls. the first one i tried was spicy so i felt a little bit better about eating it, hoping the taste of fish or crustacean would be covered up. it reminded me the first time i had escargot in Paris...i didn't necessarily like it, but i ate it for the experience. i kind of got a little light-headed, like i felt guilty for eating it. all i kept thinking about was the scene from the little mermaid with sebastian hiding from the cook who was trying to make him into sushi (you can watch the clip). overall, i'm proud of myself for trying it AND for not throwing-up. i still think i'll stick to chick-fil-a.
the second time, i went with a very confident guy who told me he could get me to like sushi, hands down. so i looked at this as a challenge (obviously he doesn't know about my extreme love for ocean animals). before i went, my uncle bob gave me some tips and told me about his favorite sushi...it was sooooo funny...the last thing he told me about was unagi AND the first thing i thought of was the friends episode where ross tells rachel and phoebe he can sense danger and he calls it "unagi" (watch it here). so the whole time at dinner, i just thought about the friends episode. one of the plates we ordered had shrimp tails sticking out and my friends looked at me and explained how to pinch off the tails...ummmm...does he know where i work and what i do??? i pinch off probably 20 shrimp tails every day at work! anyways, the outcome of the challenge was in favor of me...i did not leave craving sushi for breakfast, lunch and dinner BUT i did use chopsticks the whole time, which was pretty impressive for me. AND there was only one time that i wanted to spit out the food and throw-up...let's just say i'm glad i had some water to wash it down and edamame to clear the taste out of my mouth.
i've noticed people are quite offended when they hear i don't like sushi, maybe one day i'll be able to enjoy it, but i still feel bad.
welcome to the dark side...
ReplyDeleteLisa - another thing we have in common . . . I don't like sushi. Let's face it, chocolate is soooooooooooooo much more enjoyable. And even with chocolate . . . there's a dark side!
