i'm not sure if everyone knows what my current job is at seaworld...i seem to change positions quite frequently (just applied for 2 other ones this week). so i'll take a little time to explain what i do and where i work. i'm an associate aquarist and i work in the "forbidden reef" area. the animals i'm responsible for are the bat rays, moray eels, freshwater turtles, some tropical fish, and some other misc. fish. most all the animals i just listed, i can handle...EVEN when i was working at legoland and had to dive with the reef sharks, i could handle that. but for some reason, the eels CREEP ME OUT, BIG TIME!!!!! i just can't seem to convince myself that they're harmless animals...i know it's apart of the job, and i have to get in with them, but my heart rate rapidly increases every time i have to squeeze into their caverns to vacuum or scrub their poop. today, i had a moment with one of the eels...i'll name him scrooge. so i had just jumped down into the caverns, trying to get my bearings and hurry up and start the siphoning so i could get out asap, when this little eel starts swimming in a snake-like motion backwards, right in front of me, with it's mouth open, and it's eyes WIDE OPEN STARRING AT ME!! it made me think, "hmmmm...this guy does not like me invading his space...what am i going to do about it? i can't politely ask him to move just for 2 seconds while i siphon the poop surrounding him? and i can't apologize for disturbing him...soooo, i'll just hope he can forgive me and learn to accept that i will be in his territory quite often in the weeks or months to come." he really did look like he was mad at me...the other eels i move out of the way, they kind of just swim away like it's no big deal, but this one was different...and that little encounter made me want to hurry up even more. he was a little intimidating to say the least. the best part of my day after all this anxiety is my nice, warm shower afterwards...TOTALLY worth it!!
EEKKKK. Scary! I would have pooped my pants--but I guess that would have made more to clean up.... way to stay strong, Lisa!
